Weinberg’s Wine Notes #107 – Big-Time Syrah

…when Syrah is cultivated properly, to my way of thinking in terroirs that at least partially mimic those of its home ground in the Rhone Valley of France, then something magical often happens. The thick, purple skins remain, as do the warm, welcoming smells and tastes. But texture and alcohol levels, which can be over-the-top when they result from exceedingly warm locales, remain moderate. Cool-climate cultivation is the latest and greatest Syrah manifestation, harkening back to its time of origin, and great bottles are produced at many price points in multiple terroirs. Another point – Syrah’s warm, welcoming nature means that it plays well with others in all sorts of blends. [...]
